FAQ 1.8T Engine Moan If you have had this corrected please read message body
Had the hoses and clamps replaced per the forum FAQ listing for the turbo "moan" at 2750-3200 rpm this past week. Still happens. If I hold RPM at say 3000 during the first 30 minutes of driving, I can really cause to to sustain the noise. If I'm parked and do 3000 RPM is barley happens (engine load of course changes during driving). I feel dealer may have just told me the hoses/clamps were changed but how can I tell. Anyone know the gernal placement of the hoses ? I did a quick visual in the engine bay. Can't really see what would have been changed. I assume of course these are air flow related hoses.
Thanks.
Thanks.

sounds like you may have what I've got . . .
which is almost as much of a whine as it is a moan. I didn't think the moan from the FAQ was the same problem, because it happens more often when the outside temp drops (which is the opposite of the FAQ). Also, within the RPM range where it occurs (about 3100-3300) the pitch varies with rpm. I would expect that a "coke-bottle" resonance effect would have a rather constant pitch, determined by the effective length of the plumbing involved.
Like you I can sustain it if I hold the throttle steady. Also like you it goes away after about 30 minutes of driving. Since my nearest dealer is 50 miles away, I haven't been able to get them to reproduce the problem. However, by listening to it myself, it seems to come from the intake side as opposed to the turbo side. I think my most likley candidate at this point is some strange frictional noise from a bearing (pulley, water pump, alternator, something like that). Anyway, let us know how it goes.

I wrote that FAQ.
In case this helps, this noise was definately a moan and not a whine. It really did sound like blowing over a coke bottle. I was never able to sustain the noise - it just came and went as it pleased. Sometimes a split second - sometimes a couple of seconds. It did not go away after driving for some time. It was never there in cold temps.
Regarding seeing any changes... I actually tried to find stuff that looked new after the fix, but couldn't spot anything. I did not do a detailed comparison of before and after. What year is your car?
Good luck.
