Thanks Kris
The biggest uncertainty I have right now is removal of the crankshaft bushing. I wont be the one pulling it out but it is something I've never done... so I'm hoping it comes out without incident.
It appears that once a car reaches just over 120k while in my possession it is time for conversion. My sedan had 123k on the clock before I changed the engine out. The Avant has just under 121k right now, so we're going to be close. My idea of a 120k service is a bit more involved than most.

Yep...
The tiptronic's valve body is garbage and I've suffered for long enough. This project would be done already but we are moving to our new building this month so I don't want to start an involved process while the tooling and technicians are migrating. Once in our new building the tear down should take less than a day, assembly isn't terribly difficult and then the tricky part will be convincing the car's electronics to behave with a manual gearbox.

gah... that blows
but hey at least you don't have my problems with 034. I think an update was promised last year when all of their efforts were on it... and still nothing released. Can't say that I'm particularly impressed, it is not as if they have to get their software updates to pass DOT & EPA regulations.

there are two options I know of right now.
The instrument cluster coding is easy, the unknown has to do with the TCM and ECM.
1. Leave the ECM coded for automatic, keep the automatic throttle body and put the multi function switch in the park or neutral position.
2. Code the ECM for manual use and then swap the throttle body for a manual spec one. I am not certain to what extent the engine wiring harness is different between the auto and manual... I know the kickdown switch connection exists only on the automatic harness, beyond that I don't know how different things are.
The TCM and solenoids are an unknown I could completely disconnect the TCM harness... but I don't know what that will do. The objective is to do the conversion without a check engine light for transmission faults.
