Go with +1 - 17's or +2 - 18s max .
and 225 are about as wide as you can go. 235s work with some tires.
You can over tire and wheel this car. the weight of such sizes will overwhelm the suspension. And people in the know will laugh at you behind your back.

been learning a lot about rims and wheel styles. thanks for the input.
i'm now figuring on just keeping the rims and suspension and going with taller tires, like 205/65 r16. it'll look like a cross between an audi and jeep (maybe interesting since i live in back country "pothole" land.) lowering it is not a good idea for my nieghborhood.
but i have yet to venture as to whether that tire size is even available, i don;t think they'll even fit, the suspension parts are already too close to the stock size.

Well, if all you want to do is reduce the gap, I would suggest a factory sport suspension. Doesn't lower it too much, but is effective at reducing the wheel gap, and you can run 17" wheels with 225 rubber without looking too badly.
Simply putting a taller tire will throw your speedometer off, will affect your acceleration, and your mileage will be underreported. Because the tire is taller, it will be rounder at the edges ( ) instead of | |
Either leave it as is, or do it properly, that is my advice.
