After 130K, (2001 1.8T) the drivers seat is falling apart. When I asked the Audi service advisor about replacing the cover he said it's a real PITA job and can get very expensive. Can it really be so difficult or expensive? I imagine I'm not the only one encountering this problem... What are my options here? I really don't want to spend a fortune on this, but it's the only thing that really doesn't make the car look close to new anymore (I already searched for "fixing ripped seat" with no luck)

If you let the dealership fix it for you, it'll cost a lot...
IIRC There should be somebody selling seats...

Not A4's, but they are all similar. Buy yourself a new cover, a set of hog ring pliers, and a Bentley.
