Flickering dashboard lights

I have a '99 A4 Quattro. The red dashboard lights(along with the red ones for the radio and sunroof) lights have been flickering from bright to dim to bright again when I get in the car to go home after the car has been sitting in the cold parking lot all day. After about a 1/2 hour of driving, the lights will stay consistently bright.
When the lights are flickering, I can tap on the dashboard to get them to go from bright to dim or vice versa. However, they won't stay that way and will flicker back after a few seconds.
I don't have the problem when the car has been sitting in the garage and the rest of the electrical system seems fine (other interior lights, headlights, etc. aren't affected, and there's no effect on radio volume, horn, and so on).
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I took the gauges out and blew out the stalk for the clock/dimmer with some compressed air (canned air for computers etc.) and it was fine for a few weeks. Now its flickering again... very annoying, maybe a loose solder or something.
