Folding Key Remote for '97?

I bought a folding key and remote for my '97 based on archive posts that said it works but I can't get it to do anything. My old huge remote works fine and I used the FAQ to program w/ no luck. Has anyone else had trouble or know any tricks, or do I maybe have a bad remote?

If your car had remote locking before, it should work fine from what I've heard (I am about to do this to my '97, the key+fob set up is too bulky, so I am replacing them with the switchblade). If you didn't have remote locking before, your dealer must activate the system with a VAG computer.

The old one that came with the car works fine, but like you I didn't want to carry both, so I bought the folding key and remote, but it doesn't program like the old one does. It seems it's either broken or not compatible w/ the system in my '97.

I didn't think they needed to since my original remote works fine. Is there a different activation procedure w/ the folding key remote vs. the original big remote key fob thing?
