2.8 98' quattro, 5sp. Hi, this weekend while crossing the canada border waiting in line, i noticed while moving really slowly at low rpm's that i could hear a clicking noise out of my front end.. At one point I heard kind of a loud pop.. In talking to a friend who had all wheel drive, he said the cv joints were probably going bad.. That the axel would need to be replaced..I checked the CV boots, they are intack, and not torn.. I have a hook up for new axles cheap, but would like some further input before proceeding.. Thanks.

I had a similar noise from my front passenger side wheel area back in October. It was faint, I had to turn the radio off to hear it. The dealer ended up replacing the entire half-shaft on that side w/both inner and outer CV joints. Problem solved.
If you're not under warranty this wouldn't be too cheap. I believe all the parts came to about $700 and labor was 2 hours. Mine was covered, thankfully.
