I have a 97' A4 Quattro....while coming up to a stop sign and letting off the clutch and gas - a knocking noise (almost like someone is taking a hammer to the bottom of the engine) starts to happen rapidly & after I push the clutch back in it will somewhat stop making the noise. After taking off again the car will vibrate around 2500rpm thru 1st and second gear. It only does it so often...any suggestions on this one?

I have a '97 2.8 Q as well. I too had that problem. I took it into Autohaus and they fixed it for me. That was years ago so I forget what it was at the moment. Something you better have looked as for sure though.

I took it to an Audi certified mechanic and they tell me since the car is not making the noise at the moment the cant diagnose it. Do you think it was clutch related? If so, I just had it replaced about 8mo. ago.

the knocking sound is more like a loud tapping noise and it seems to be coming from the clutch area. It started doing that a couple days ago. It happens when I down shift. The day I took it in to have it looked at, it stopped making the noise. I told them to keep it and drive it until that noise comes back. It may be a throw out bearing (hopefully not) I just had the clutch replaced about 8 months ago. Or it could be that the clutch needs adjusting....
