Fuel Gauge Problem

Just bought the car yesterday and I noticed that I was at the gas station filling up and the fuel level when I turned the car on was below empty and then shot back up to about to 3/4 tank when I drove for about 5 minutes. I noticed the miles till empty was moving around quiet a bit the whole drive. When I got home and turned the car off waited about an hour and left I noticed I was just over about a half a tank and then the needle dropped to less than half a quarter tank. So I went to the station and the pump clicked off at 4.5 gallons and when I turned the car on was close to full. So if anyone has any suggestions to what the issue may be that would be great.

They become corroded particularly if the car has been parked with low gas.
If not you will have to clean or replace.

Today I found another thread on here from a while back and it said to pull fuses 15 and 28. 15 being the instrument panel and 28 being the fuel pump. When I did this the fuel gauge went from 3/4 full to a little over half. So do you think this may be a possible solution because the car was sitting for a while with low gas.
