Since the switch only seems to be bad in the closed position, I move the switch to the full tilt position and then use the fey in the door to close the sunroof. That way you can still use it if you want to. Also, I've found that if I just turn the switch a few times, the sunroof will usually behave for a couple of weeks.

Same thing happened to a buddies brand new 2001 A4. It is a bad switch, but replacing the switch won't fix the problem that caused the switch to go bad in the first place. There's most likely a short in the actual sunroof motor. It shorts across the switch and burns it out, making it do all sorts of weird things. (His would randomly open halfway and then stop).
The dealer replaced the switch, which was burnt out and apparently the cause of the problem. Three days later it started doing it again, so they replaced the switch and the motor, that's when they found the short in the motor, which had fried the first new switch.
The problem hasn't come back yet. Let them replace the switch but make them pull the whole motor to be sure that it's not something shorting out the switch first.
