Default Gas Mileage on 99 A4 2.8

Just bought a 99 A4 2.8 with 40,000 miles on it. I've been following the average gas mileage on the computer and have so far seen terrible results. I'm averaging around 18.5 mpg with 50% highway and 50% city driving. Not driving the car hard at all. Is this normal? My wife has a BMW 328 also with a 190 hp 2.8 engine and gets around 26 average mpg. I find it hard to believe the Audi could be so much worse. Please help.

quattro hurts the mpg; the GIAC chip actually adds a little, i get about 21.9 on a 50/50

I guess I left a few things out of my previous message. I do have a quattro and it is a manual transmission. Is there a way to disable the AWD when I don't need it? Would I do any better with a 1.8T? I can't believe the mileage is so bad.

Default Sounds a tad low, but not far off.......my 2.8 averages about 20.....

which equal parts highway and city.

Again, quattro doesn't help.

Default actually not really, some of my friends with 2001 1.8ts average around 19mpg....

he drives kinda fast but still, not very good for a 1.8 liter engine. From my own experience, might as well just have fun with ur car since u r getting bad millage anyways and doesn't get much worst when u go ***** out!

Anyone want to buy my car? This is really disappointing. I thought the mileage would be much better. The first $19,500 takes it.

Default more horsepower does not necessarily mean worse gas mileage.......

the NSX is 2 wheel drive and lighter. I'm not surprised that it has better mileage.

What were you expecting when you bought the car? To match the advertised numbers? ALL car makers exaggerate mileage numbers.

Take a look at 4WD cars with similar sized engines and weight to the A4. You'll find that they're just as bad as the A4.
