gas mileage (a little long)

There have been some posts about lousy gas mileage lately and last week I thought that the problem had surfaced in my '00 A4 1.8T Avant w/tip (4,800 miles). I thought this because the average gas mileage in the trip computer all of sudden fell from 23.4 mpg to 21.2 mpg. Well, I took a little road trip over the weekend and monitored my gas milelage the old fashioned way and guess what..... My trip computer was showing 21.4 mpg and when I calculated the mileage divided by the number of gallons at the pump, I got 25.1 and 24.0 miles to the gallon with criuse control set around 80mph.
Does anyone know if what the trip computer does is just average over all of the miles driven between resets of the mpg indicator? Or is there some kind of glitch in the computer?

But in my case, the trip computer was indicating higher than actual mileage. I didn't reset for over 1500 miles. The average mpg was reading over 30, when my actual mpg was about 23.5 (no tank ever over 28 mpg).
