Gas Mileage on your V6 A4?

I recently bought a used 2000 Audi A4 with the 2.8 litre V6 engine. One thing I noticed is the poor gas mileage I am getting. I am not driving this car hard at all and it seems I am getting like 16-17 mpg and my trip computer says I am getting 19.1??? I'd think I would get 20 mpg combined but it doesn't seem that way. My RPM's do seem a bit to high. For example, when traveling 60mph, my RPM is about 2750 in fifth gear.
My last car was a 2000 Nissan Sentra SE 2.0 and that car got 25-30 mpg. At 60mph that had an RPM of about 2850 in fifth gear.
Does this gas mileage and RPM seem normal to you V6 drivers?

My 99' 2.8 TIP Quattro gets about 22mpg combined and 25+mpg for highway running at 74mph cruising. Your mpg seems low. I also run about 2450rpm at 70mph so your revs are higher. I believe the TIP tranny is geared a bit higher so should run a bit less rpms than the MT.
Unless your foot is a bit heavy then you should be seeing much better mpg than you are. Your rpm's almost seem like 1.8t gear ratios. Scan with VAG-COM and look for codes and faults.

Is your car a 5-speed manual? My 2.8 with auto 5-speed turns a little under 2000 RPM at 60, and normally I average 23-25 MPG, primarily freeway, often cruising at 80, and as much as 28 MPG when driving easy on the freeway.

Anyone with questionable fuel mileage should try a new Coolant Temp Sensor.
Sorry to sound like a broken record on this, but the CTS is clearly a common failure item, it's cheap to buy, and not terribly difficult to replace.

Just got back from a 350 mile ,all highway, road trip with my '99 Tip Quattro 30v and averaged 26.8 mpg for the run. This was with A/C on and cruise set at 78 mph.
There is something wrong with yours if that is all your getting. I would agree with 4D4 that a bad CTS can easily be the cause and produce no code.
