I just took delivery on a new 2000 A4 manual/sport. Whee!
What is your experience on when the car really runs out of gas?
1. What is really empty on the gas gauge? Can the needle go past the E mark? If so, how much? I do have a trip computer, and naturally I don't trust it for a second. Running on "0 miles" now ...
2. How does the car behave when it's running on fumes? With my previous car, it would just stall if I floored it, but otherwise would limp along fine assuming non-aggressive driving. Does the A4 do this too, or does it just run out with no "hiccup" warnings?
Thanks in advance.

My gas warning light comes on when the gauge hits the first of the red marks. (There is a second mark and then the third mark at the very end of the gauge.
My car started sputtering the instant my gauge lined up perfectly with the last mark. The car just started fading and losing power - I wasn't even able to go 2 miles once this started happening - the car finally died and refused to start. The gauge was still right on the last mark - it had not travelled past the end of the gauge at all.

You referred to the "last" or "third" mark. Do you mean the tiny sliver just beyond the big fat red mark? I would best describe it as a dot. If this was a lesser car (say, a Chevy
), I would just assume it was a flaw. That's the one you ran out on?

in tank gas pump. It depends on fuel for cooling and when you run out of gas the pump can get too hot and get fried. Just a reminder.
