a friend was telling me about his girlfriend's old car, which had "wicked dark windows". let me start by saying i'm not sure if this person was telling me the truth or not... but:
he said his girlfriend bought the car in florida, or somewhere down south, which has a more liberal tint law than maine's 50% limit. and he said she got pulled over several times, but just showed the cops a piece of paper saying something about how the car was bought out of state and they let her go. he also said one of her windows got shot out by kids with bbguns, and the shops here wouldn't put in a matching window, until she showed them this magical piece of paper... can you really get around the law like this? or is my friend a lying piece?
and what's up with maine? 50%? that's hardly tint at all...

it's like that in cali. NO tint up front is legal and people get busted for it all the time, of course cops look the other way also, but if they want to, you're screwed.

One.... You can say the car was like this when bought..... two, you can say you bought it out of state with this tint.
Those are the best way around getting a "fine" for having too dark of windows. But honestly, anything past %45 and I think it's a little much.

this won't work in N.H. because of yearly inspection!

http://www.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tint/</a

In MA, it was his grandfathers from Florida, he registered it in MA. Its was like 15% or 10% or something. He got pulled over and was almost fined $2100, (7 windows $300 each). But luckily it was in our home town, and his father is a towny, so he got off the fine. But still had to remove all the tint.

Still check with the DMV. A doctor can write the note that you can have the tint but some states still require you file the note with them and I believe they will put a note on you vehicle information on their computer.
I also think that you have to put a small sticker of something on one of the windows to let cops know it is legal
