Default Getting ready to replace my water pump seal that is leaking, should I

replace my water pump too? I'm not having a problem with the pump yet and do not know how old it is. I have a 96 A4 with 170K. Also, any recommendations on other atypical parts that I should consider replacing?
Thanks.

Default Water pump seal is not a replacable item; you'll need to replace the whole pump.

You'd be foolish not to do a full timing belt service given the labor involved.

Default AH, good info. I went to an auto place today and they said that the seal was $7.60. The previous..

owner said the timing belt had been replaced 10K miles ago so I'm teetering on whether I'll do that or not. I'll need to search and find out what the average 2.8 timing belt life span is.
Thanks for the help.

Default They might be thinking of the gasket between the pump and the block.

which is different from the seal.

For the timing belt, at 10k I'd probably let it go if you can verify that the t-stat, roller and tensioner were changed. (sounds like maybe the pump wasn't?) Regardless, you'll need the timing belt tools and you'll want to reset cam timing.

Default well if you are already in there then replace both.. but you will be tearing

everything apart so make it a complete timing belt job
