The GIAC chip caused the turbo to increase boost, which in turn gave the engine way more power than was intended.. This caused the alternator (which is powered now by an overly powered engine) to produce too much electricity that powers the ECU. He probably had a boost spike that sent out a power spike and fried the ECU.
This is the same effect that causes old men taking viagra to have a stroke.
Ok, yes, I'm kidding!!!!! :-p

of course the dealer is going to say the car is "overboosting" when the chip raises the boost to 1 bar over the stock .5 or .7 bar.
Even if the car is overboosting more than the chip's programming tells it to, that is not a result of the chip and that will not fry the ecu.
Assuming the chip is soldered in correctly (who did the soldering on your ecu?), it will not fry the ecu. And since you had your's in for a year and a half, I can safely (I think) assume that the solder wasn't bad and didn't cause it.
If you believe everything the dealer tells you, then I have an island to sell you.

If there was a direct problem with chipping that caused the fault in your ECU, it would have occured immediatley. Chances are that your ECU has been exposed to some sort foreign electric charged which caused a faulty ground and shorted out the ECU.

can o' worms my friend.
In this case I believe that the simplest explanation is the correct one. That is, this is an uninformed person who was lied to by his dealership.
I think other respectable chip makers (without naming names) have more respect for the knowledge of the people that come to this forum than to think that making a post claiming "GIAC CHIP FRIES ECU" will be believed.
