Default smell could be oil dripping off the back of the valve cover

stick your hand back there and feel around. If you get oil on your hand, it answers the question.

Default thicker oil does not fix varnish in the hydralic lifters

best oil is 0-40wt.

If you have noisy lifter you need to add detergent in the oil (get from a autoparts place)

The smell could be either:
1. oil burning off the exhuast as was stated by mAd1
2. clutch smell from the burn out - it sometimes takes a week for that to go away.

You want a 0w40 or 5w40 weight oil if you want a thicker one.

Default A comment.....

The lightest oil I run in our 30v is 10w, and at almost 80k, our 30v has "No" oil leaks. The 10w seems to quiet down a bit of the clatter as well. Just make sure it meets factory spec. It also uses little or no oil between changes. I find the 0w stuff far too thin for non-turbo engines. Many people will chime in I'm sure, its personal preference to the above mentioned items. I've seen too many problems and issues with engines over the years with thin oil being a major factor in the problem. It truely depends on how one drives and maintains their car, the maintenance should be catered to accordingly.

Default clatter is due to varnish in the lifters

I run 0-40wt with none
