Default Yup, they're slow - Re: Got a 96 a4 loaner car yesterday. Thoughts and questions (long)

The 12v A4 cars were dogs when brand new. The automatic was really horrible. What's even worse is that there isn't much in the way of upgrades available for this engine. The engine is smooth and quiet, but that's about all it has going for it. In the older 90's the 2.8 12v engine did a little better as it had less weight to lug around.

Those bugs sure have a lot of head room (I'd say 3-6 inches more than any other car I've been in)

Slow is all relative. My '96 isn't a dog, but it isn't particurly fast. I chose it over the newer engine because the difference while noticable didn't justify the price difference for me. Compared to many other cars, they are all fairly slow. whether you have 150hp, 175 hp, 195hp even a chipped turbo with 210hp, it provides good acceleration, but nothing to really brag about. Before talking too negatively about some peoples cars, calling them dogs, remember most sports cars will beat any Audi engine wise. Handling, Quattro, looks, Audis are great, engines are mediocre, but a lot better than the inline five of my old 90q.

Just my opinion.
