Default EGT's are good for determining when you are about to...

...start detonating IF you know what that specific temp range is.

Indirectly, it can also tell you whether or not your are leaning out or too rich just by changes in normal operating temps. If you temps start to deviated positively from your baseline, you might be leaning out. If the deviation is negative, you might be running rich.

Typically, you want to try and keep your EGT temps low to prevent the occurance of preignition.

Default How noticeable are those variations?

how would ambient temperature affect the readings?

Default Amb. temps will contribute very little to the readings...

...as the probe is plumbed off the exahust tract. Generally mounted either on off the exhaust manifold or on the exhaust piping before the cat.

Variations could be around +/-100 deg.

It's all a matter of knowing your car and how it's performing.

Default ok, I just didn't know if those variations we going to be obvious

or if it was going to be something I'd have to be really looking for to find.

how hard is the installation? I know the concept but how do you actually put the sensor in?

Default Well, you'd have to drill and tap a hole for the sensor bung...

...then weld it in place to prevent any leaks.

Very straight forward. Very simple. I definite DIY if you have the equipment.

Me, I was able to drill and tap a hole but ended up paying an exhaust shop $60 for half an hours worth of welding to mount the bung. Expensive, but it was the only shop in town willing to do it.

Default I got no equipment

and I would be concerned with the idea of anyone around here tapping my engine... I might stick with boost only....

Default It's not so bad...we're talking about a 1/2" hole...

...~1 hour install time.

But, whatever floats your boat.

I guess I'm just more gung ho about cuttin' **** up in my car.

=)
