Carroll Shelby had a strong hand in developing the muscle cars of the last generation, and this was but one of his many contributions.
These days, we still expect our cars to have muscle, but with refinement and finesse. We've learned to appreciate corners, too. Companies like AMG are doing similar things now.
It all makes me wish I had $12k to blow on an APR Stage III+ with the suspension, brakes, clutch, and wheel/tire upgrades to go with it for my A4. Got sleeper?

Well I tell ya sonny. I remember when V-8s ruled the Earth. Seriously the GT350 and GT500 were very rare back then(late 60's) Kinda like the SVO
Mustangs of today. GT500's were about 425HP and about 500ft/lbs tqe. All in a special suspension and braking package. Kinda like if took a S-4 and
made a S-4R out of it.

Although the original GT500's of course had 427's, the cars built for the movie did not. Per the July issue of C&D, the engines in the cars ranged from 289's to a 400hp 351. Not exactly 427's, but then they probably did a lot with the sound, if they used the actual exhaust notes from any of the actual cars. BTW, I do agree on the sound of a 427 on full boil. It sounds even better, however, out of the sidepipes of an SC Cobra.
-My two cents.

The Shelby Mustangs came in two models: the GT350 and GT500. The GT350 from 1965-1968 was equipped with the 289 small-block V-8 rated at 306hp stock, about 350hp@6750rpm in racing trim. The 1969-70 GT350 was equipped with the 351W small-block V-8. Of 562 GT-350 Mustangs built in 1965, 37 were GT-350R (SFM5Sxxx coded) cars for SCCA B/Production competition. They took B/P class honors in 1965, 1966, and 1967. 1966-1970 Shelby Mustangs were not road raced by the factory or factory supported teams.
The Shelby GT-500 Mustangs were equipped with the FE series 428 big-block V-8 rated at 355hp@5400rpm. No 500hp NASCAR side-oiler 427 engined cars were built by Shelby, but Ford did offer a few (50?) stock Mustangs with 427 engines and automatic transmissions to drag racers in 1968.
A total of 7,359 GT-350 and 7,009 GT-500 Shelby Mustangs were built from 1965 to 1970, for a total of 14,368 cars.
Though some of the Shelby Mustangs came painted with LeMans stripes, they didn't win the 24Hours of LeMans. That race was won by the Ford GT-40 Mk.II (427ci) in 1966 (with McLaren/Amon), the Ford GT-40 Mk.IV (427ci) in 1967 (with Gurney/Foyt), and the Ford GT-40 Mk.I (302ci) in 1969 (with Ickx/Oliver). Ford owes those victories to Shelby American because they sorted out the GT-40 and produced a race ready and winning car.
And that's history...
