is it hard to change the thermostat without removing the timing belt?

Default I know people have posted that they did it w/o taking off the belt, etc. and zip tied it...

but not really sure how they were able to pull that one off? Not doubting they were able to but man is that going to be tighttttttt and I personally wouldn't risk reefing on the belt like that...

Default And it really saves no time. Why not just remove it?

And take the opportunity to check timing.

Default How do you know its bad?

Have you tried bleeding the coolant system? I'd avoid a mess and take off the belt.

my guess is he knows b/c it is stuck open and the car won't come up to normal temps?

Default We had to pull the timing belt on my Dad's 2.8.....It didn't look like there was any way around it.

IIRC the belt passes right in front of the thermostat and doesn't have enough play that it can be moved to clear the thermostat...someone on here has supposedly done it though I can't imagine how.
