Has anyone ever had their hood just pop open without you realizing it?

By that I mean, it's still caught on the latch, so it doesn't slam into your windhshield!
I had noticed that my alarm wasn't giving its usual pathetic-sounding *beep* when armed. It was dark out, and my car is black, so I didn't notice it right away (and even drove it a few miles like this), but when I parked it again, and locked it with the remote, and didn't here the wimpy *beep* yet again, I got suspicious. Checked the trunk (which I knew wasn't open since there was no indication on the dash cluster), walked around the car and checked the doors, and when I came to the front....it was like I had the wind knocked out of me for a second (you must know what I'm talking about...even though it's unlikely, the mere thought of the hood flying back while you're driving is a heart-stopper!). Anyway, I closed the hood, naturally, and it's remained closed and latched ever since (this was last night).
To be clear, I hadn't been under the hood myself since an oil change a week and a half ago, so I know it wasn't me. And I can't even imagine it was like that ever since the oil change (yes, even good mechanics make mistakes, but I trust these guys to look out for my best interests).
I did have one more perverse thought though. Could someone possibly lift the hood without access to the hood release inside the car? If so, is it possible that someone got the hood open, and was checking to see if I had xenons and when they learned I didn't, decided it wasn't worth the trouble to steal my headlights? Or is that too far-fetched a theory?
Any other thoughts or ideas? Are B5 A4's prone to UHU (Unintended Hood Unlatchings)?

It was in my first car. A 1990 Honda Civic. Just imagine driving 65 mph and all the sudden the hood hits your windshield. Luckly i didn't freak out and i just pulled over and tied it down with wire.
