Default Has anyone with a pre-99 model done the short shifter install?.....

I have a 98.5 A4, the center counsel around the shifter is all one piece and does not have the removeable top plate like the newer models seem to have. I have to literally remove the entire center counsel to get to the guts of the shifter. Not a big deal as I have already done this to install my stereo cables... however will there be problems installing the short shifter this way?

Default Did the install on my '97.....

....you only need to remove the shifter-boot from the top, simply snaps out. Then you have full access to all the bolts for installing the new shifter.

Default "Full access?"

I did it on my 99 as Andy describes but "full access" may be overstating things. It was not particularly easy to get to some of those nuts in there. My hands were sore and carved up afterward. But it was worth it.

Good luck,
Rich

Default Maybe a poor choice of words....

....probably what I should have said is that all the bolts/nuts/etc. that you'll need to access can be accessed from up top while you're sitting in the car. I know on certain VW's and BMW's, installing a short-shifter requires removing bolts and stuff from underneath the car, not too fun unless you have access to a lift.

Default Toughest nut was the 1 holding the shifter to the linkage just below the ashtray...

And be sure not to strip the two thin nuts holding the sound insulation down. I did and had to Dremel them off.

Default Andy - your sig...

Looks like a widescreen sig shown in an ordinary JPEG. ;-)

Sorry, I must be watching too many DVDs on my TV.
