Has anyone removed airbags to work on steering wheel?

My 96 A4 has developed the well known "dashboard peel". I'd like to glue it back down. After looking over the service manual, it lookes like the dash cover comes off relatively easily, once you've removed both airbags, the front console, and the steering wheel. Now, I'm not afraid of working on auto electronics at all, but airbags make me a bit nervous. Could someone give me some feedback on whether the airbags are as scary as they seem, or if a few obvious precautions are enough to make the job safe. Also, has anyone out there actually removed the dash cover? How tough was the job?
Thanks

I know, sounds way off topic, but a friend of mine's 96 A4 had the dreaded dash curl and was able to have it fixed easily and free. He had a cracked windshield, and when they were replacing the glass, they were able to put clips on the leading edge of the dash - something that can't be done with the glass in place.
