Default have a ? about the 1.8t engine

Alright guys im a audi nut. I have two 5ktq. I'm rly getting serious about buying a A4 1.8t. Now what im wondering are the early 1.8t engines like 97,98 and so on the same as the new ones. Like I know hp numbers are different but are they pratically the same engine? Thanks for the help.

Default 97-99.5 1.8t engines were non drive by wire

there is an actual throttle cable. they went to drive by wire (computer regulated throttle) in 2000. in 01 the timing changed and iirc the turbo is different, thus the 20 hp increase
