As good as that bagel you had was, if it did not come from NYC, you still don't know what you are missing.
I have had bagels in just about every large city in the US. Some are better than others. None match the really good bagel shops in New York.
Even in places populated mainly by ex-pat New Yorkers (i.e. South Florida) who would obviously know the technique for making good bagels, it is something about the water in NY that makes the bagels unique.
I know I have just invited some flames from the New York haters out there, but that is just the way it is.
