headlight bulb problems - any explanation?

I bought a 99.5 2.8 in August of 1999. My forth headlight bulb has now blown out (the third on the left side) in 22,000 miles. Audi has replaced the bulbs, but indicated that there is no electrical problem that they can locate. Service suggests that maybe I have my headlights on too often!!??. Has anyone had this experience? Any thoughts on how I should proceed. Setting up a service visit (with a 2-3 week wait) every time is getting old. What's going on? Any suggestions appreciated.

I you have smears then the mechanics are installing the bulbs the wrong way! They are supposed to use rubber gloves. The acid from raw fingers gets on the bulb. The bulb gets hot and eventually blows out.

Waiting 2-3 weeks each time for a headlight bulb replacement? And driving around with only one light during the time you're waiting for a service appointment?
I'd just get an extra bulb next time you're at the dealer. What do they cost? $20.? That'd be worth it to me.
If your dealer is at a loss to explain the problem and wants to do the right thing, he'd give you one "under warranty".
They're a cinch to install. Just make sure you don't touch the glass. Handle them with a paper towel.
FWIW: I've only had one single headlight bulb burn out in 3-1/2 years / 63k miles. Is the seal which encloses the housing leaking? Do you see moisture inside the headlight lens?

I've had several headlights burn out on my A4. I bought them from a parts store myself and haven't touched the bulbs at all with the exception of a paper towel. Anyone hear of bad electrical problems in 96 Audi A4's.
