Having just replaced my fog lamp assembly, I heard of a product by 3M called Ballistic Vinyl that I can apply to the lens to protect it from impacts. Does anybody know where I can get some of this stuff? If you know a place in the bay area lemme know and I just drive over and get it.

...let me know. They haven't got hurt yet, but I'm just anticipating it with my 50 mile drives to and from the office.

Last time I checked, they only had the two-piece version which is made for the older halogen headlights (pre-projector lights). Maybe they have a new version for the one-piece lights now.
I have the ones for the older lights but never used them and did the conversion to euro projectors, so if anyone wants to buy the unused two-piece headlight protectors, I'm willing to sell them.<p><b>Drew S.</b> <a href="http://members.aol.com/drewinva/audi/" target="drewinva"><img src="http://members.aol.com/drewinva/images/98.5.jpg" border="0" align=center></a> <b>98.5 A4 2.8 qm</b>

with dent resistance built in, so no need for the protector.

The headlights have a polycarbonate lens which is extremely difficult to break, but it will pit/scratch over time, so you may be interested in something here.
If you broke the fogs lens, then most likely it is glass.
The two piece headlight assemblies are most likely plastic and therefore more prone to breaking than the 99.5+ models. I'm guessing here since I have seen a number of older Audi's with yellowing lenses. I don't think polycarbonate will yellow over time.

The headlight lenses on my wife's 98.5 A41.8TQ are both cracking in a spider web fashion INTERNALLY, right in front of (surprise, surprise) the low beam bulb.
The dealer will replace them under warranty at the next scheduled service and even carries them in stock, so apparently this is not uncommon...

I bought the headlight protectors from Clair, and it also comes with small round pieces to fit the fog lights.
$32 to protect both headlights and both foglights.
Now if only I didn't botch up the installation...
I highly suggest that you follow the directions, which unfortunately I did not do.
