First, mask what you don't want to cut with a couple of layers of duct tape. This helps guard against any slips and acts as a guide for what needs to be cut.

Then, use a dremel tool with a cutoff wheel and make cuts as shown. I made the vertical cuts so I could take off a little at a time with a hacksaw (my wheel wasn't large enough to reach horizontally in that area). I found that a large pair of dikes worked even better to cut the tabs off (note that the first tab is already cut off); the metal is pretty soft. Go slow and take your time.

Here's the (almost) finished product. A little grinding after it looks like this and that should do it. Then paint the bare metal to protect against rust. Any close color will work, since it won't show anyway.

I still need to grind mine down a little more, but the fit is pretty good the way it is. I did a little engineering to use the existing wiring. Email me, if you want to know what I did. HTH.
