Hearing pinging/detonation under WOT
Hey dudes,
In the last two hundred miles I've started hearing pinging/detonation under w.o.t. It's a '99 quattro manual 2.8 with the emergency kit in the rear seats center arm rest.
It doesn't matter whether the engine is hot or cold or the gear used.....definite detonation under load pretty much every time I try it. Obviously, I'm backing off doing that for now. Gas has always been 91 octane from a several different brand-name stations.
1. I have no lights on the dash
2. Car performance is normal otherwise
3. Will be VagComing tomorrow but I was wondering if someone could give me some tips including if the VagCom test says everything is normal
4. I just changed the spark plugs with OEM replacements and there's absolutely no difference.
5. Coilpack is next on my regular maintenance list of things to replace; I'm hoping that's what it is...it's the original set with 96k miles
6. I love you guys
Make me love you more...

I'm running down my current tank (it's at half right now) to nearly empty and I'll refill
at some random Shell/Union 76/Chevron that I don't normally go to. That should let me eliminate that possibility. Obviously, I'd love for it to be something that simple.

have you logged the car? If so, are misfiring/detonating across all cylinders or just one or 2?
could be a clogged fuel filter. Did you run the tank very low before you last fill up? Have you ever changed your fuel filter?

Will be logging tomorrow (well...maybe today)....and yes fuel tank was nearly empty a little while..
back. The EMPTY light came on and all that. The problem of course, is that I wasn't paying close attention to the pinging problem because I didn't know it existed yet until a while after I refilled the tank.

VagCom says NO detonation is occurring.....found out my alternator is outputing low numbers...
13.3 volts is the max at idle with all accessories turned off and 13.1 volts with the lights on and radio working. I'll look into this issue first (maybe loose belt or simply a bad alternator..dunno at the moment) and see if it's related.
