Heat situation....

my heat hasnt been working. I figured it was the heater core and it needed to be changed. Cold air blows out but air still blows out. SO i take it to a different mechanic than i usually go to and he says that i need a new thermostat. He back flushed the heater core and says that its not the heater core. He also said that heat comes out but only when you rev the car really high. When the car idles the heat turns cold again. I never noticed this cause usually i leave the heat on for 10 min and it just stays cold and i just turn it off.
My question is, can this really be the thermostat that is causing my heat to act like this or is this mechanic trying to get at my pockets. The reason why i ask is that i had my thermostat changed like 3 months ago when i did my TB. One of these mechanics is bul****ing and i want to know which one?
I also noticed a really nasty smell coming out when the heat starts to work for a little while. It almost smells like a mixture of coolant and ****. But then when the heat turns cold it doesnt smell. Is this normal.

my car warms up really fast now compared to before. Thats why i think that my first mechanic really changed it. I remember him showing me the old thermostat too. It had like a spring on it and a round thing on top.

if you are even close to needing to do timing belt change, might as well because you will be pulling apart 85% of the stuff needed to do the timing belt, just to change t-stat.
sorry.
sorry.

in one shot. All the belts, tensioner, W Pump, Snub Mount and thermostat. I bought the ECS Ultimate Timing kit. I got it done by one mechanic that did for me cheap. He showed me all the old parts and so i believed that he did it. Car runs better and warms up faster.
But this mechanic that does stuff cheap to says i need a new thermostat. Maybe the thermostat was not installed properly or something. I think theres something blocking the way for the heat to pass through. Maybe those flaps arent wroking right.

You have to remove the Timing Belt, Water pump, tensioners, etc to get to the thermostat.
Do it yourself if you are so inclined, took my brother and I around 8 hours, and that was working at a leisurely pace... no rush.
