Mine have the brown stains and the heating element no longer works in my 1999.0 A4 sedan w/ cold weather package, some investigation reveals when the glass is removed (move the mirror to it's most straight inward position facing you from the seat then pull with your fingers on the exposed edge and it will pop out, 2 wires connect to the back of it for the heating element), mine shows 12+v no matter what if the key is on, however there's no continuity between the two element pins on the glass itself meaning the element is shot.
So, if you're having this problem or just want to replace your stained brown nasty mirror inserts, first verify you have voltage at the mirror housing with a multimeter... if so, check for continuity on the pins of the glass insert itself... if voltage exists and continuity doesn't, it's obvious the glass insert is bad.
Part numbers are as follows at least for my pre-99.5:
8B0 857 535 (drivers side)
8B0 857 536 H (passenger side)
Now the best question is, where do I order my replacments? 1stvwparts wants $24 for the driver's side and $61 for the passenger side, +10% for being an "audi specific part" plus shipping... any other recommendations?
