My 97 1.8tqm w/ 84k, (80k on MTM chip), started losing pwr, stuttering, on the way to work. The check engine lite came on. After I stopped the car started but ran for only a few sec. the engine never got to idle speed. The car had been running fine, all maintenance done timely. It just happened all of a sudden on the way to work Thur. dealer says car has compression, they changed spark plugs, exhaust looks ok. The car runs fine for a while then misfires between diff. cylinders. I checked the archives. Possible solutions: timing belt jumped a tooth. Coil wires need replaced. Engine needs decarbon treatment. Replacement of mass airflow sensor. Bad fuel injectors, throttle valve, or fuel pump. Anyone w/ similar problems? Again this just happened all of a sudden. Dealer first thought it was the spark plugs or wires. So much for my future 100k no problem post.

Same thing happened to me in my 97 1.8TQM. Car would loose all power and then I could not start it on demand. I would have to wait five or ten minutes to start the car. Problem was immediately identified by Tischer Audi of MD as a corrupted ECU. Computer was replaced and car has sun with no problems since.
