I drove one last weekend and loved it, but like I said I got scared when I saw the posts. Seems there are a few bad apples (or lemons!) in the lot, and when you get one, it's a nightmare.
Besides, the Audi 1.8 FWD is < $1k additional, and insurance is $200/year cheaper! Go figure.

The internet is a resource, that is often used by people when something is wrong. Do a similar search on the A4, and you may find just as many negative reponses. (heck, even on this site, the number of "something is wrong" posts outnumbers the "I love me car posts") Factor in the number of A4's vs. Jetta's sold, and you may find that there is no significant difference in the reliability of one car over the other.

From your post, it seems like the GLX is already out of the question! As it should be when compared to the A4. I too test drove both models and I am currently waiting on my 2001.5 A4.
The quattro is definately worth it. Have you test drove the A4 FWD vs. the AWD? Big handling and cornerning improvement. Plus better resale.
The 1.8T is the way to go. Better gas milage, lighter, easier to mod than the 2.8, and practically the only option available exculsively to the 2.8 is leather seats. Heck, the leatherette is nice enough!
But my big deciding factor over the GLX was the quality I imemdiately noticed in the A4. Less cheap plastic. Heavier, sturdy feel. Great reliablitiy record.
Go with the 1.8 A4. Then sit back and drool over this forum while you wait for delivery!

To the price of the option ($1750), add sales tax and interest (paid or earned). That's $140 in CA tax and $271 of interest assuming 4-year 7.25% financing. That's already $411 over the option price.
Now add higher gas consumption of say 3mpg less. Over 100k miles, assuming 23mpg for Q, 26mpg for FWD, and $1.80/g for premium, that's about $900.
After 100kmiles, you are already $1,311 over the option price! If the car is relatively new, you may be able to get $2000 more for a Quattro. But the older the car becomes, the smaller the difference between FWD and Q resale will be.
