Default Help!.....Any body have this nifty feature on their A4? ......(long)

I let my car idle for 5-10 minutes and it shuts off. This has been happening for a while, didn't really notice it when I bought the car, but sometimes I'll let it run in the parking lot while I'm talking to someone and once it's been running for 5-10 minutes, it shuts off completely.

This didn't bother me until tonight. I was at a friends house and when I went to leave I started it up and let it run while I was talking to my friend. Sure enough, after 6 or 7 minutes it shut off. I told my friend I had to go and started the car and drove away.

I made a 1/2 mile down the road to the first stop sign and when I pulled up to the intersection it died. That freaked me out. I started it back up and drove up to the next intersection and when I took it out of gear the rpm's fell to zero and it died again. Now I'm tweaking. What the hell just happened? for the next 20 minutes it wouldn't idle, it would just fall to zero and die.

By the time I made it to my street everything was cool again and it idled just fine. WTF?

The whole time this was going on I was watching my gauges, but nothing was unusual, temp was fine, oil pressure was right where it should be, voltage was it the 12-13 range, normal.

Any body else have a problem with letting their car idle too long? Any ideas on why it wouldn't idle when I came to a stop? I'm clueless.

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Car idles, gets up to temp. Something with fuel/throttle control and/or filters?

Default I have not had a chance to vag it yet....

this just happened 30 minutes ago, it's late here and I don't have a vag. It's been in the shop and had all codes cleared about a month ago. It was doing this "idle shut off thing" before it went in but that wasn't why I had it in the shop, besides they didn't say any thing about any specific codes that were cleared, it was just an oil change.

I think Optimus may have something, it could be something to do with the fuel system or maybe the ignition system. Could a bad coil cause this?

I don't know, I'm a computer tech, not a mechanic.

Default It could be running rich, and fouling the plugs out....

It may be time for some new O2 sensors, and an ECU reset.

Default The problem is likely a bad idle control valve...

Your car runs fine in all other conditions, right? Have them check it out when you bring it in.

A VAG 1551 might not necessarily list the idle control vavle as a problem. It will probably show some other sort of conditions and you might need repair manuals to decipher them.

Hope you get the problem fixed. Good luck.
