HELP - Engine clacking - Oil pump?

HELP - Engine clacking - Oil pump?
A4 1.8t with 65k miles. Oil level light came on while driving, checked the oil level and it is fine. Engine is now clacking (valves and lifters?)at idle and increases with RPM speed. I changed the oil and filter. Still making noise. Could the oil pump have died? I'm assuming driving it to the dealer in this state is really BAD!, never mind that it is out of warranty Could the oil pump lose it's prime while driving? Seems odd. Maybe a clog?
