Default Help Engine not running right.

I have a very big problem with my A4. The engine will barely idle and has an extremely difficult time powering the car when in gear. The idle just bounces back and forth between 500 rpm and 1500 rpm. Smoke is coming out of the exhaust with a very black tone to it. Its not pouring out but its definitely noticeable. Anybody shed any light onto the problem?

MAF sensor perhaps. Black smoke sounds like a rich condition. Does it smell like gas?

Default Short of using a VAG-COM, I think you can unplug the MAF sensor

if the car runs better, that's a good indication. Just don't drive far with it unplugged, as I don't know what that will do.

Default Thanks that was the problem.

Unpluuged the Maf and the car idled almost perfectly. When to the VW dealer (no audi dealer in town) and got a new maf for 80 bucks. Now car is running perfect. Thanks Solaris.
