Help... Has anyone had a similar problem with their car misfiring and throwing these codes...
I have a 99 1.8 TQM with chip. I had the CEL come on the other day with these codes and I got under the hood and fiddled with it for a minute and it went away...
4 DTC's Found:
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
35-10 - - - Intermittent
16686 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
35-10 - - - Intermittent
Then today, it threw these codes...ugg!
3 DTC's Found:
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
35-00 - -
16687 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
35-00 - -
16686 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
35-00 - -
Anyone had a similar problem and if so what were the fixes. I've tried moving the coil packs around, but no good. It worked once before but didn't this time. Has anyone had the problem from just spark plugs?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Ugh... same problem here!
Haven't pulled DTC's yet, but will be running the VAG-COM on the car here in a bit.
So far I've tried changing the power stage output modulator to no avail. Usually this is the part that seems to plague the '97-'99 models; this modulator amplifies the current to the coil packs and controls the spark. If it goes bad you may see a problem that looks very similar to a coil pack failure. Unfortunately for me, the new modulator didn't fix my problem- A few from this forum are thinking it could be a coil pack or spark plug connection- Hopefully I'll be able to narrow the problem down after seeing what the VAG can tell me.
I'll post my findings as soon as I get them. If I may ask, how many miles do you have on your car? I have a little over 102k on mine- The problem just started a week ago. The stumbling/surging/misfire seems only to take place under acceleration- At idle, the car feels fine.
Anyhow... I'll keep you posted.
Thanks!
Randy
