Default Help: Installing a Bose Symphony head unit in a non-Bose A4

Hey.

Okay, here's the deal. I own a 2000 A4 1.8T Avant with the non-Bose Symphony head unit. The CD player went dead a couple of months ago (very common, apparently), so I just bought a used Symphony head unit off eBay (same part number as mine). However, it appears that the Symphony unit that I just bought has the "Bose" option (it displays "Bose" upon startup). So, I'm having compatibility problems (only the rear speakers work). Here are my questions:

1. Is this behavior (only the rear speakers working) expected if you install a Bose Symphony unit in a non-Bose car?
2.If so, is this because the "Bose" cars use a seperate power amp for the front speakers?
3. Is it true that I can re-program (using a VAG tool) the Symphony head unit that I just bought so that it will NOT use the "Bose" option?
4. If so, how do the front speakers get power in a non-Bose system? From the head unit itself?
5. What should I expect (in terms of price and attitude) from an Audi service department if I ask them to re-program my new radio?
6. Does anyone have any recommendation as to an independent shop/mechanic in the Boston area that can reprogram my new radio?

Any knowledge and experiences that people can share would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

ray

Default that's the way it should work, all you have to do is

change the coding on the HU. I'll look in a min. as to what it should be.

Default I don't know the answers to any of your questions except

that reprogramming can be done by someone with a VAG...and there are plenty of us around Boston to do that for you to see if it helps.

Default do this

You need to recode the HU. 00007 is the standard setting and 00017 is for the Bose setting, both are coded for the CD changer and secondary display. You'll need access to a VAG to do this.

Ray,

If you have a VAG tool that can re-program my radio, I'd really appreciate your help. I'm located in Newton, and would glady drive to your location at a time that's convenient for you. You can backchannel me and let me know what works for you.

BTW...the guy sold me the radio just told me the following: "...They (an Audi dealer) should be able to recode with a VAG 1551, VAG 1552, VAG 5051, or VAG 5052. The most common of those machines is the VAG 1551 also known as the  eblue box†although any of those machines should do the job."

Thanks again,

Ray Boyce

Default Re: do this

Thanks - that's exactly what I need to know.

BTW...do you think that by re-programming the radio to "Non-Bose" mode the front speakers will now work? Was I correct in my assumption that the Bose system uses a seperate power amp for the front speakers?

Thanks again,

ray

Default welcome

yes, you're assumption was correct. Once the right HU code is in, the correct speakers will start to work.
