Help! My A4 sounds like a tractor!

There's a loud clattering noise coming from the engine compartment at revs below 2300rpm --- it sounds like a diesel tractor. As soon as I rev it past 2300 rpm, the engine sounds normal. When the revs come back down below 2300 rpm, the clattering sound returns. It sounds like it is coming from the belt area, possibly inside the cover where (I presume) the timing belt runs. Is there a tensioning pulley or something like that that may have lost a bearing? Maybe a turbo problem? I haven't noticed loss of power. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

if you think your timing belt is going, don't even start the engine so that someone else can listen.
A tow to a local garage is way cheaper than a new engine.

Turns out my timing belt tensioner failed and the timing belt skipped some teeth. Get it to the dealer FAST, FAST, FAST!
THey'll replace the tenioner, check your belt and reset your timing.
