HELP! My heart warming Whoosh turbo noise has turned in to a very loud whine! (updated)
It does this at all engine speeds and boost levels and is a major screech at anything over about .6 bar. I have a 99.5 Tip, GIAC chip. I will put the stock ecu back in in a few minutes and see if it clears up. Any words of wisdom or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I replaced the chipped ecu with the stock ecu and the whine is still there. It begins immediately as the turbo starts to spool and just gets louder as the pressure increase. It reduces in volume as the pressure drops. The noise is a very loud woooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Definately a mechanical whine and not the normal woosh of compressed air.

are you saying that the giac chip and the stock chip make the exact same whine at the same sound level , pitch and length when accelerating the car equally? They should'nt , the whine from the giac chip should be much more prominent that the stock chip on the stock k03

The stock chip makes exactly the same whine up to its max boost.
The GIAC chip gets much louder as it build boost over stock. I am working on posting a video so you can hear it.

I've only had it for about 4k miles. I switched it to mobil1 super-syn 5-30 two days after I got it.
47k total miles on the car. I don't know what kind of oil was in it before I bought it. I have had nothing but problems with this car from day one, and nothing but excellence from my '96 in 180k miles WTF?

Well, if it turns out the turbo needs to be replaced...
and you don't want to go for a K04, or a big turbo kit, then consider buying a rebuilt K03, if you want to save some money. Should run you about $600-700 for rebuilt, vs. about $1K new. While you're in there tearing things apart, locate and replace as many vacuum lines as you can find.
