...I'm really dreading even the thought of leaving my car at a parking garage/lot, (there's not a mark on my car and I really would like to keep it that way), but maybe there are some places that the car would be safe? TIA

Don't know of any immediately around 23rd/5th. But there is one next to Penn Station/MSG which is a Park-n-Lock when nothing is happening at MSG, but valet when there is an event going on. (Haven't been there in a few years, so not sure if that's still the case.)
I typically use the Park-n-Lock on 42nd/10th.
If you go farther south (aka downtown) there is often good street parking near Washington Square Park. Green St, W4th, etc.

...that would be (I would think) somewhat better than street parking, yes? I'd be really concerned with theft potential parking on the street ...

First, it has very little to do with the place/lot and all about the guys working there. Like all professions, there are good parkers and lousy parkers and you can never predict what you'll get when you pull in...
I suggest 24th Street in that area because the Met Life building and CSFB have their headquarters there with a couple of high end restaurants (Tabla and 11 Madison Park) so I would imagine that any parking garage around there sees their fare share of luxury cars and picky drivers...
Maybe if you call the two restaurants and ask them where to park, they'll give you the 411.
Godd luck.
