Default Help Please - Stripped the collar bolt trying to replace wheel bearing (long)

Hope your night is going better than mine.

So I tried to remove the collar bolt from the center of the rear hub tonight and it stripped. I was using the proper 14mm hex key which I tapped in and everything. I think the bolt was just so corroded it let go.

Any suggestions about how to deal with this? I cut a slot in one side of the bolt and tried to spin it with a screw driver and hammer but no luck. I have applied heat and WD-40 to the extent I can get to the bolt. I am dreading the idea of drilling it out. Nevermind the fact that I don't have an easy out that would be big enough.

Any help or suggestions appreciated. Looks like I'll be bumming a ride to work tomorrow

Thanks in advance,

Nathaniel

Default Just drill the head off the bolt.

That'll be enough to pull the axle out. Once it's out there should be enough threads to weld something on to pull the threaded part out.

Default A comment.....

Depending on how much is left, you might consider getting a hold of a high quality(Hazet, Snap-On, etc) 1/2 drive 14mm hex drive socket. Put some valve grinding compound on the end of the socket and use an impact driver to loosen it up. The compound will give the socket some grip and bite on the end of the bolt head. This is the first step I'd try. Good luck.

Default Ironically, I just bought a used MIG welder yesterday...

But my skills are highly suspect, I will probably just end up welding the hub to the bolt and the tourch to the hub.

Default Here's what you do.. Take your inexpensive 14mm allen, drive it into the hex, and put the ground

right on the socket.. then, weld the allen into the collar bolt. You'll want to have another 14mm allen handy to put the new bolt back in.

Alternately, you can try to weld a nut onto the end of hte collar bolt, but that's trickier, and requires a better weld.
