I am trying to install new pads on the back of my
'96 A4Q. I can't get the piston to retract. I have tried pushing and turning it clockwise several turns and neither seem to work.
Any ideas???
Thanks

Need a special tool to retract them easily.
Basically, have to both turn and push on the piston. Tool does all that for you.
Have it, bout can't remember name/number. Do some digging on your own in the archives.

After hours of screaming at the rear brake cylinder, I decided to remove the caliper from the car. Very easy, just one brake line and the E-brake cable. I then placed the caliper on the floor with the piston pointing up. Carefully put vice grips on the upper edge of the piston so as not to damage the important parts. Got a deep socket the size of the inner piston ring and stood on the socket with it on the piston while I turned the vice grips. The piston went right in. Did the other side the same way in about 30 minutes from start to finish. Not a good design, but it only added about 5-10 minutes a side to remove the whole caliper and made the job easy.
Good luck.
Good luck.
