Default Help with sensor location?

Help! After replacing blown head gaskets on my `96 A4 2.8 SOHC, things have been going back together nicely since I fortunately had all of the hoses (and most electrical connectors) numbered. Unfortunately, I have a small sensor that I can`t find a location for. I can only tell you that it plugs into a harness next to another harness that leads to the oil pressure sending unit on the front of the engine block. Both of these wiring harnesses are on a bracket right behind (and above) the driver side cylinder head. It looks to be a temperature sensor, connected directly to a pair of wires that are about 12 inches long, covered by a black sheath, then it connects to the harness at the afore- mentioned bracket. Where does this go????!!!! Thanks!

Got a picture? Is it a small probe looking thing? it *could* be the exterior temp sensor?

I`m going by the dealership this afternoon and see if their parts fiche will help. If not, I will take a photo when I get home. Thanks

This has my repair progress at a standstill. I am mad at myself for not marking this sensor! The Audi dealer service department was a waste of time.

Default Nope, that's not the exterior temp sensor, it appears to be an oil temp or pressure sensor..

My guess is temperature.

Thanks Kris. I disconnected the unit last night and meant to bring it with me to work, but instead rushed out and left it at the house. I`m driving home during lunch to get it. The end that plugs into the harness has the part number on it. From that the Audi parts guy should at least be able to tell me what it`s called. Yesterday he printed out the engine sensor parts diagram for me, but since I didn`t know the part number, it didn`t help. By the time I made it home, they had closed. The saga of the mystery sensor continues. We`re getting there by golly!

Default Well I'd imagine that there is a large hole in the head somewhere begging for that sensor...

still have not had the chance to hit the Bentley.. I'll do it in a few.

As it turns out, this was the EGR temperature sensor. The mounting hole is in the back of the intake manifold right below the throttle body on the passenger side. I had to take the throttle body off to find it. I learned that the part number for this sensor is on the connector plug, 077 919 529, and also the ETKR doesn`t show a location. Anyway I now have it mounted - finally!
