It takes intelligence, integrity (well, for the quality salesperson), diligence, tremendously thick skin and hard work to succeed in sales. I've always been frustrated, mainly at engineers at times (no offense to the numerous engineers on this board...I'm a techy at heart
), at how they assume we salespeople should be churning out sales left and right, because they feel they've engineered such a great product. True, it may be a great product, but there's so much more to sales than a great product.
Top-notch, intelligent sales people are soooo hard to find. Maybe you're one of them :-)

Beyond the need to be AWARE of the underpinnings of what is driving this person to buy and WHY, the skills needed to make a convincing arguement, the organizational skills to process the paperwork, the time management skills to maintain customer contact and support down the line, the ability to negotiate and mediate, the sensitivity to gauge a person and situation, and the ability to work with people and coworkers.
Lastly a healthy respect for your customers, potential customers, and coworkers. Tolerance tips off the iceberg.
