Default High pitched metallic scratching noise coming from the gearbox /engine area when I rev to 6k RPM

When I rev the engine to around 6,000 RPM and let it coast down to say 5,500RPM I hear a strange high-pitched metallic scratching sound. It usually stops around 5,500 RPM. It sound like something is spinning very quickly and get scratched. My A4 has almost 40,000 miles and I've driven all of those and never abuse the car/clutch.

Has anybody else heard of this problem?

TIA, my car is a 2000 A4 1.8T QMSX

Default Check turbo ? If chipped and turbo blown, you're done dude - no warranty

on the turbo anyways.

If it is something unrelated, your warranty should be intact.

Synchros usually make noise while you are shifting if they are going out. 2cd gear synchro failure is the most common in any car. Throw-out bearing can make noise - push clutch in and out to see if the noise goes away. You've checked heat sheild for rattling ?

Default I had a problem with the heat shield before, but that should be tied down by now.

And I don't think the turbo is blown because I still get decent boost when I accelerate.

The only time I hear the scratching noise is when I rev really high and let the car coast down to a slower speed. And it only happens in the upper RPMS(6,000+).

Default You have to feed the mice under the hood every day, or they get unhappy!

:-P Sorry, can't really help you.

Default Why are you getting rid of your 2000 A4?

I'm in a similary situation, my A4 is getting a bit long in the tooth, but think I'm going to mod the heck out of it and keep it a few more years.

Not 100% sure, but I don't think so, car doesn't making "honking" noise.
