Default High speed brake fade in the rain - '01 A4

When I'm on the highway, in the rain, it seems like it takes a second or so for the brakes to heat up enough to start working properly. Aside from changing my driving habits when it rains, is this normal on Audis? It's been doing this since it was new. Does anyone else have this problem with stock brakes?

Default Not much can be done... it is one of the B5's minor faults

I believe the C6 has an ABS system which applies the brakes periodically in the rain to clear the rotors. This newer ABS function may be on other newer models since 2005. As for the B5... well there were two retrofit kits, one was for some spoilers under bumper the other was larger brake disc shields... I've just learned to drive with it as the larger shields don't do much but they are cheap... I've tried them on both of my cars with various brake configurations.

Slotted rotors seemed to help on my B5s, for a while at least.

Yeah, I just make sure I apply the brakes periodically to keep them "primed", and leave more room than usual in front of me. I save my "fun" driving for dry weather. Oh well.

I saw somewhere that a larger dust shield helped...

Default a comment...

<center><img src="http://i16.tinypic.com/4r9qhzo.jpg"></center><p>I found ATE Power Discs(in pic) helped in a number of ways:
-better inital bite and improved performance
-less fade
-brakes stay cooler
-no issues in the wet(and we're located in the pacific northwest, we see wet here!!)
I've put these on a couple of our cars(audi, porsche) with good results and the cost is minimal(about $90 a side). They're not a home run, but for the price, exceedingly effective for a daily beater.

Do those grooves chew up the pads?

Default A little bit but they get packed with pad & rotor material over time...

so I'm not sure just how long the effects last... and yes I've owned a set... never had any issues with them but I still had wet braking issues with 288mm ATE power discs.
