Home ECU "tinkering"??

I work as a software engineer, so I thought I would ask if retrieving the ECU code is possible. From doing a little research, I figured out ( I think ) that the code resides on an EPROM chip on the ECU and is encoded in some way. Some stuff I read indicated that the only way to get the actual code off the chip is to physically remove it from the ECU board and install it on a custom board.
I have the Rosstech cable and software, and since the software is able to read and write to the ECU I am assuming it is possible to access it somehow without the vagcom software as well. Or is the code which controls the timings, pressures, etc...located in a different place on the ECU than the code which controls things like the Central Locking System and other systems which do not directly effect the car's performance?
I basically just want to pull whatever I can off of the ECU and look around to see how things work. ( I also would like to not screw up my ECU in the process)
Any info would be appreciated

you don't need to remove the chip from the ecu itself. you can connect with a special cable called the "kwp 2000 plus" available from ebay (approx $200). with that cable you can download the rom file, modify it, and send it back to the ecu. be sure to correct the checksum before sending it back to the ecu.
to edit the rom you need to use some software such as WinOLS which is designed to edit motronic ecu bins.

And continue with a google search for "motronic ecu tuning". There's no way to access the maps via VAG-COM. There is some software for DIY tuning, but it is expensive and it would require a dyno as well.
Your time would be much better spent researching and playing with something like Megasquirt.<ul><li><a href="http://mango.stealyourface.net/bosch/">http://mango.stealyourface.net/bosch/</a</li></ul>

daunting task, especially to teach to other people. i've been trying to learn to edit the maps in WinOLS for a while.
but when I couldn't find out the offsets of the maps for timing/fueling/wg duty/boost i gave up temporarily.

DAMOS/ASAP2 project files, you won't know where a lot of the important maps are on your ECU. Unless you have a bosch engineer hook up!
